CAN DO! - Top 6 Finalist
Rochey Walters, the founder of Khoi Kulcha, saw an incredible opportunity in transforming a negative experience into a budding company which promotes Khoi San culture. He has built an unstoppable brand and is inspired to continue expanding the company’s offering. We chatted to the founder about his heritage and building positive perceptions around Khoi San culture.
Q: Please can you share a bit about your background and what inspired the birth of Khoi Kulcha?
A: Growing up as a child, I used to get teased a lot at school by being called Khoi San. It was used as a negative and derogatory term, and something I didn’t want to be associated with at the time. In Matric, I started doing research on our heritage and realised we have a very strong culture. I wanted to creative a positive movement around the Khoi San culture and started brainstorming ideas on how to make our culture more attractive to both young and old people, and that’s how Khoi Kulcha was born.
Q: What is the long term vision for Khoi Kulcha?
A: The goal is to release a new product each year. In September this year, I’ll be launching our Khoi Kulcha iced tea. Next year will see us launching a Khoi Kulcha energy drink using a natural herb that the Khoi San people used to eat when they were hunting for increased energy. The plan is also to have pop-up stores around the country.
Q: What inspired you to enter the CAN DO! #UnbreakableS2 competition?
A: The competition popped up on Facebook and it was very serendipitous. I took a chance and entered because to expand the business I need resources, especially with the new products that will be launching. With hard work and seizing opportunities, I believe I can make it.
Q: What advice would you offer to aspiring entrepreneurs?
A: It sounds cliché, but if your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.
